Highland District Hospital's Inpatient Unit, located on the third floor, features private rooms for your peace of mind which are dedicated as general care rooms, critical care rooms, bariatric care rooms, and rooms that allow for negative air pressure for infection control.

Highland District Hospital’s Extended Care Unit, located on the third floor, is a Medicare and Medicare Replacement Plan approved unit that focuses on inpatient rehabilitation prior to returning home after a hospital stay. Designed to transition you from acute care, to inpatient, skilled care, all while admitted to the hospital. Our ECU offers the same team of providers from admission, during your therapy, and through discharge. Our provider team includes:

  • Physicians
  • Nurse Practitioners
  • Pharmacists
  • Nurses
  • Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists
  • Case Managers

How do I qualify for HDH’s Extended Care Unit for my skilled therapy?

  • Primary Insurance must be Medicare or Medicare Replacement Plan
  • Must meet admission criteria set by primary insurance
    • If Medicare is primary, must have qualifying, 3 mid-night, admitted status, stay in a hospital
  • Must meet Medicare guidelines for skilled services
  • If covered by Medicare Replacement Plan, must obtain precertification (completed by our Case Management Department)

What is considered a skilled service?

  • Examples would include a need for treatment with the following services or diagnoses
    • Physical, Occupational, Speech Therapy
    • IV Therapy
    • Skilled Nursing Care
    • Wound Care
    • CHF
    • COPD
